Purpose
The purpose of the UKFORUMs Newsletter is to bring you the latest information about our family of CompuServe forums. In it we'll try and give you a small taste of what is going on in the Forums, and we'll highlight some files and message threads from each Forum.

The UKFORUMs are the number one place for UK CompuServe members to meet and discuss any topic that is of interest to them. This is also the place for CompuServe members in other countries to find answers to questions on UK specific matters. Members from other countries will find a warm welcome awaiting them from all on the UKFORUMs and we look forward to hearing from you wherever you are.

UKFORUM

You have found the UK's No1 Forum, dedicated to social matters, debating the news, and packed with discussions and files and chat across a very wide range of topics. Whether you want to find a new love, discuss politics, or find out what is happening around the UK this is the Forum for you.

Interesting Threads/Messages:
What sorts of objects do people have on their PCs? Find out in the message thread entitled, What's on yours??? in the Chat & Gossip message section.

Interesting Files:
evolut.txt, in the Religion library, is a discussion what makes evolution a "theory" rather than an accepted fact. It also includes comments on why it is used to attack Christianity.
The infotext.txt file, in the UK Business/Finance library, gives advice on how to write a CV.

UK Information Technology

This is the place to discuss any Information Technology related topic.

Interesting Threads/Messages:
What is the charge to take a phone number from BT to ntl? See the message thread entitled, Number portability costs in the Telecoms/Phones message section.
The message thread Mailbox full, in the message section CompuServe 2000, explains what happens when you're mailbox becomes full.

Interesting Files:
WEBPOST.EXE, in the WWW/HTML/Java library, is a Windows 95 program used to upload HTML pages to your web site. It understands long file names and subdirectories.
CIS2000_V.t is a text file that describes how you can connect to CS2000 via any ISP so you can get Email etc and use the forums without logging out of the other ISP. Download it from the CompuServe 2000 library.

UK Medical

You will find this Forum is packed with UK Medical Professionals, and those who wish to talk with them. Please do bear in mind that the Forum is a discussion area, and not a replacement for seeing your Doctor.

Interesting Threads/Messages:
The Alcohol abuse message thread, in the Questions & Answers message section, discusses some alternatives when dealing with alcoholism.
Are helicopter ambulances cost-effective in dealing with emergencies? See what others have to say in the message thread entitled, Air Ambulance in the Ambulance/First Aid message section.

Interesting Files:
MURPHY,TXT (located in the General library) is a text file is a humorous look at what Murphy’s Trust would be like.
OATH.TXT contains the text of the Hippocratic Oath. The file can be found in the Frequently Asked ?s library.

UK Money

UKMONEY is one place where you can read and write about money without drowning in MLM adverts or get rich quick schemes, and with the emphasis on the pound rather than the dollar. UKMONEY is designed to be a place where those in the Finance Industries can come together and exchange messages with others in the field, and also a place where the layperson can ask questions about finance and benefit from the experience of other members.

Are you getting married or divorced and want to find out about the financial aspects? Ask your questions in the Marriage/Divorce message section.
Do you want to get out of debt? Get help in the In debt message section.

Interesting Files:
MARKTIPS.TXT (located in the General library) lists the top 10 marketing tips for people starting a business.
The General library contains the file AVC.TXT which describes two ways of topping off your company pension.

UK Police/999

This is the place to discuss UK policing. Despite a perceived lack of esteem in some quarters, the UK Police service is still considered the best in the world, and is the envy of many countries. Here you can meet and debate with those involved in the job. We have officers here ranging from Constable to Chief Constable, and almost every UK police force is represented, along with others from all corners of the world.

Interesting Threads/Messages:
The message thread entitled, Death by shame, discusses why a police officer committed suicide. You can find it in the Personal Safety message section.
What is zero tolerance policing? This subject is discussed in message thread entitled, Zero Tolerance found in the Politics/Media message section.

Interesting Files:
PEPPER.594 is an extract from the FBI Bulletin of May 1994 on the use of pepper spray as a means of controlling violent persons during arrests. It is located in the Health & Safety library.
USPOLI.TXT (located in the Worldwide Policing library) contains a very brief summary of the complexities of policing in America where there is nothing comparable, either at the state or US level, to a Home Office or Interior Ministry.

UK Recreation

This is the place to discuss any UK Recreation related matters.

Interesting Threads/Messages:
Do you need/want the recipe for "play dough?" You can find it in the message thread entitled, modelling dough located in the Other Recreations message section.
Are you researching your family tree. See if you can find your relatives in message section History/Genealogy.

Interesting Files:
Do you want to track the lottery results? The Lottery/Gambling library contains several programs to do just that.
Several back issues of the "Mersey Shipping News" can be found in the History/Genealogy library.

 
UK Professionals

This is the place where UK Professionals meet and where others seek their views. This highly successful mix of people from all aspects of professional life is one of the strongest communities on the CompuServe system. Many here have worked with one another to enhance the quality of their professional careers.

Interesting Threads/Messages:
The millennium bridge in London needs active dampers or shock absorbers and will remain closed for several months. Read the details in the message thread entitled, A bridge to bad located in the Design/Engineering message section.

CONFPERS.TXT (in the Health/Social Care library) discusses confidentiality in the NHS.

UK Sport

Chat about what's going on in the world of UK sport here on the UK Sport Forum. Exchange messages with fellow sports enthusiasts all over the world.

Mad Forum

Do you know a good joke or riddle? Do you want to hear a good joke? Or do you just want to hang out with all the mad dogs and Englishmen? This is the place to be!

The message thread Unintended Consequences is about July 4. It is located in the Gather Here Ye Nuts message section.
Here's a rhyme about Wimbledon....... in the Wordplay message section.

Interesting Files:
CHOCCY.TXT in the Mad Dogs&Englishmen library contains a couple of no-fail recipes for chocolate cake and chocolate pudding.
What do country bumpkins make of computers? Find out by downloading the file  techno.txt, located in the Jokes library.

Summer BBQ Info!

We would like to invite you to a get together for all our members and their families and friends. This is the Member BBQ which is taking place on Sunday July the 30th at the Sportsman Hotel Chorleywood, just off the M25, and near the M1 and M40. Also right next to Chorleywood BR/Underground Station. Our members traditionally turn up there in great numbers and seem to enjoy the day a great deal.

The day consists of:

Bar open all day: Pay as you go
Superb BBQ food including steak and lamb chops and burgers and chicken and even a dessert. The Special Subsidised Price is just £5.00 for adults and £2.50 under 14's.

The day is a social one, and should be very relaxed and pleasant all round.

It is a good chance to meet and make friends with other members. People travel from the across the UK, and they have even been known to attend from as far away as the USA.

We will also have a computer or two setup for those who can't keep away from them or who want to discuss any problems they are having using CompuServe while there are plenty of experts around.
